Located at the convergence of Anderson, Pickens, and Occonee counties, Clemson University can be found in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in northwest South Carolina. Clemson is in the proximity of mountains which access many outdoor sports such as fishing, snow skiing, white-water rafting, hiking, camping, kayaking, and canoeing. The campus also borders Hartwell Lake where activities such as swimming, sailing, and waterskiing are all available to the students. The downtown area of Clemson also provides a place for students to shop and dine (Clemson University).

Clemson University is a standard public four year school (College View), ranked as the 25th best national public university by U.S. News and World Report (U.S. News and World). Founded in 1889, it was officially opened as Clemson College, an all-male military school, in 1893, until it opened as a civilian coeducational college in 1955 (Clemson University). Now, of the 15,697 undergraduate students, 54 percent are male and 46 percent are female (College View). It was renamed Clemson University by the state legislature because of the larger academic opportunities developed as the school evolved (Clemson University).
